Surrogate pairs & mixed input

Characters above U+FFFF (like 🚀 U+1F680) are encoded as a surrogate pair — two \uXXXX escapes that together represent one code point, exactly how JavaScript source expects them. The reverse pass understands mixed formats in one input: \u0048, U+0048, 0x48, H and H, separated by spaces or nothing at all.

How to use Unicode Converter

Paste any character and the converter reads it back three ways: code point (U+1F600), name, and its UTF-8 and UTF-16 byte sequences. Escape sequences — \uXXXX, \u{...} and \xXX — convert in both directions, and table mode breaks any string into per-character detail.

Beyond curiosity, this is the debugging entry point for invisible characters: zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces and soft hyphens look identical in an editor but break routing, validation and diffing. Paste suspicious text here and the impostor shows up by name.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Unicode inspector show for each character?

The code point (U+XXXX), decimal value, UTF-8 and UTF-16 byte sequences, block and character name — exactly what you need when invisible or confusable characters break an app.

How is an emoji stored in UTF-8?

As a 4-byte sequence in UTF-8 and a surrogate pair (two UTF-16 units) in engines like JavaScript. The tool shows both encodings, which explains counting differences between systems.

Why does my text contain invisible characters?

Zero-width joiners, BOM marks and soft hyphens arrive through copy-paste as U+200B, U+FEFF or U+00AD. The inspector table highlights such invisible code points instantly.

Can I export text as escaped sequences?

Yes — output modes include \uXXXX escapes, U+XXXX notation, HTML numeric entities and raw UTF-8 bytes, useful for source code literals and cross-language debugging.
